The Way We Write Our Story Directly Impacts Theirs

The Corolla Wild Horses are a beloved symbol of the Outer Banks roaming freely along Corolla & Corova 4x4 beaches

Always Remember - Share, Care & Beach Responsibly

  • First rule of thumb for driving on the 4x4 beach - air your tires down to 15-18 PSI before entering the sand. Lowering tire pressure increases the contact area of the tire with the sand, allowing it to "float" on top of the sand rather than digging into it. This will make it much more enjoyable and assist you in not getting stuck.

  • Now you have your vehicle ready - please drive safely on the beach - the horses roam WILD & FREE.

  • While you are relaxing in the sand - please don’t dig holes. The holes are dangerous for everyone. Holes cause a hazard to law enforcement, life guards, visitors, turtles, horses, you... Make sure to fill in any holes and smooth over before leaving.

  • Horses share the beach and may come by while you are enjoying your day. Remember: feeding and/or approaching the horses is dangerous and illegal; maintaining at least a 50-foot distance helps ensure both your family’s safety and the horses’ well-being.

  • Feeding horses or leaving trash accessible can harm them severely, as their digestive systems are adapted only to local beach grass, and eating unfamiliar food can be fatal.

  • Always secure your trash: On the beach or at your vacation home your trash can be fatal to the horses. Please make sure all trash cans are closed tightly and secure and if you see trash on the beach please be a Good Samaritan and pick it up.

Now that you have made it to your Destination - Keep in Mind

  • Feeding and/or approaching the horses is dangerous and illegal

  • Stay at least 50 feet from the horses and always use a telephoto lens when taking pictures

  • Feeding or leaving trash accessible can harm the horses severely

  • Please make sure all trash is contained with lids tight so the horses can’t get to it

  • Trash is picked up twice per week - please check with your property manager for pick-up days

  • Over flow trash can and should be taken to the landfill
